Artist Residency Application

Description:

SDSU Furniture Design and Woodworking program is requesting applications for a renewed artist-in-residency program, to begin in the summer of 2026. This residency will be for one full year, July – July, and include a comprehensive exhibition of the work completed, catalog, unrestricted studio space and access, engagement with an active undergraduate and graduate program, and, most importantly, time in which to grow your work and explore new things. Two cycles are available, July 2026 – July 2027, and July 2027 – July 2028. The two selected artists come to San Diego and embed within our wonderful program, to create their own work in a supportive and vibrant community of makers.

Compensation:

This Windgate Foundation fellowship includes a generous artist stipend of approximately $70,000, as well as funds for workshop materials, some supplies for public events around the residency, and generous funding to mount the culminating exhibition and produce a small catalog of the works presented. SDSU Furniture faculty and students will help the residents find housing in San Diego, and offer assistance in whatever needs the artist has as they adjust to the new location. *Some remaining funds may be available to assist in shipping works, following their time with us.

Requirements:

A successful Artist in Residence at SDSU will occupy the provided studio consistently during the work week, in service of developing and undertaking important new works. The resident will engage with, but not officially teach, both undergraduate and graduate students, and, we hope, will contribute to the strong sense of community that we have at SDSU. The resident will mount a show consisting of new works completed or in progress during their time here, and may wish to include existing works as well. The resident will remain in residence for one full calendar year. Finally, the artist will give one public artist presentation, in either the first or second semester of their year in residence.

Applying:

Before you apply, have a look at our past residents. The residency scope has shifted and changed over the years, beginning as a single-semester residency, and evolving since 2010, and in that time, over 20 amazing artists from across the spectrum of furniture-related practice have joined us.

If you are interested and have questions, please contact Associate Professor Adam John Manley at amanley@sdsu.edu.

Please complete the application below. If you are interested in being considered for either year-long session, please select both to indicate as such.

Deadline: 11:59 on Sunday January 18th

We look forward to seeing your materials!!!
